The Toyota Racing Development team has once again outdone themselves in this arena by introducing the TRD Air Intake System for a Tundra Platinum truck.  The TRD performance air intake system works in two ways.  First, by giving the air a smoother, less restricted path into the combustion chamber of the Tundra's powerful 5.7L engine, a higher volume of oxygen - or more air - can enter the chamber.  This additional mass of cold air leads to the second feature of the TRD Cold Air Intake System:  because
this air is so cold it is more dense; more dense air means more per cubic centimeter/millimeter/mile... whatever measurement you desire, it just means more of it!

To summarize quickly, the TRD Cold Air Intake System pulls in colder, more dense air and pulls the air in faster.  Both of these equate to more and more oxygen for the combustion engine to use, and more potential energy overall.

Now that you know what any particular cold air intake system is, the next question you have to ask yourself is "why should I spring for the TRD Air Intake System?"  As always, the start of that answer comes to the important fact that it is custom-made to fit your Toyota vehicle or Tundra Platinum truck.  In fact, the Toyota Racing Development performance air intake for the Tundra replaces the upper half of the stock air box, filter, and inlet hose assembly and features a reusable TRD air filter, high volume upper air box, and a unique Intake Flow Accelerator (IFA) which all adds up higher quantities (or volumes) of colder air resulting in an increased horsepower and torque output.

And let's face it... isn't that why we love the Tundra 4WD truck, Tundra Limited, and Tundra Platinum series?

As with any other TRD component, the Toyota Racing Development Air Intake System is designed using the blueprints of the OEM intake.  Though it might not sound like a huge deal, this is important because the aftermarket air intake could potentially interfere with the Mass Airflow Sensor; a critical engine sensor.  Some aftermarket or non-Toyota authorized cold air intake systems interfere with the reading of this sensor which can result in check engine lights, poor fuel economy, and reduced power - or as we said above, the only things we DON'T want our Tundra Platinums to do!  But not only will an aftermarket air intake possibly damage or reduce the potential of your Tundra truck, many of them are not 50-state emissions legal like the the TRD Performance Air Intake system.

The TRD Performance Air Intake System is sold as a dealer installed or over the counter option after the retail sale of the vehicle.  Unfortunately at this time we cannot sell them  in vehicles as you would buy one off our 39 South Main Street lot in St. Albans, VT or on handytoyota.com, nor can the price of the TRD Cold Air Intake System be lumped into the car loan in VT, lease payment, or other financing method.  We can however sell you the Tundra Platinum, order your TRD Air Intake, and within a week's time have it in your truck!

Simply speaking, the more air and fuel you can efficiently get into the powerful 5.7-liter V8 DOHC engine of your new 2012 Toyota Tundra LTD or 2012 Toyota Tundra Platinum, the more power you create.  Though elegant and scientific in nature, it really just boils down to that "simple" fact.
